CE Marking
· THE CE marking is a European proof of conformity
· It is also described as "passport" that allows manufacturers and exporters to circulate products freely within the EU
· The letters, "CE" -- French for "Conformité Européenne,"
· The CE mark is not a mark indicating conformity to a standard but rather a mark indicating conformity to legal requirements of EU directives
· CE marking is mandatory for trading in the EU
Objective
· To develop a uniform marking requirement
· To make it easy for custom officials to determine if incoming material meet applicable code,standard and directive
· To remove the technical barrier for free movement of goods within EU/EEA, EEA is European Economic Area ie. European Union(25 member countries along with Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway
· To ensure safety of human while using it
· To define a common standard which is acceptable to all member countries
· To minimize accidents
Directive
· Directive is legislative instrument (legal requirements) which talks about essential requirements, e.g. protection of health & safety etc.
· It has superseded diverse requirements and regulations of individual European countries
· It is required to adopted in each member’s individual national law and regulation
Harmonised Standard
· While directive talks of essential requirements, Harmonised standard talks of detail requirements of product
· It is being prapared by European standard bodies-CEN,CENLEC,ETSI
· When standards are prapared in view of new approach, these standard are called Harmonised standard
· So Harmonised Standards are European Standards adopted by CEN, CENELEC or ETSI, following a mandate issued by the European Commission
· These standard are prepared to implement legislation
